Introduction
Our project
Our project includes building cardboard arcades. Students will design and build an arcade game from recycled materials that incorporates tech to some degree (light up / sound). Have a showcase event with community to celebrate. Entry points for all students’ levels and capabilities, so success across the board. Our goal is to have all grade 8 students with a completed project and all grade 8 staff on board. Our plan: term 2 start, ongoing and cross curricular, and celebration night in May 2023.
Hear what our students had to say about their arcades !
Tell us about your team and your school community.
Brooks Secondary School is the only high school in Powell River. We offer a variety of learning programs and want to ensure we provide all possible opportunities to our learners, so they have the experiences and tools they need to be successful. We recognize that all students are unique and learn/thrive in a variety of ways, one being with academic rigor, another being through real-world hands-on learning experiences. We feel we have truly embraced this over the past few years and are eagerly anticipating finding new and innovative ways for our students to explore their interests and passions, while feeling safe and supported. As a team we use as many cross-curricular connections as possible and focused on the core competencies of communication, collaboration, creative thinking, personal and social responsibility, and course content.
Tell us about the importance of learning through play for your team and for your students.

Our team is passionate about Play Based Learning, in fact we are already immersed in these practices. Our hope is to be able to provide more engaging opportunities through this project by reaching more students and supporting and encouraging more staff to use play-based learning strategies in their classes. Our other goal is to be able to connect and ideate with schools who are practicing play-based learning strategies.
